Biography of Margaret Atwood

Birth and Family

18 November 1939: MA was born in Ottawa, Ontario, the second of three children. She was born into a white, urban, middle-class Canadian family whose second environment, the northern wilderness, became deeply familiar to her from long summers in the bush where her father did his research.

Her mother was born Margaret Killam, a member of a Nova Scotia family which acquired prominence as merchants, politicians, financiers, and latterly philanthropists. Her father, Dr. Carl Edmund Atwood, was an academic entomologist.

MA spent her childhood in Ottawa, Sault Ste Marie, and Toronto, with summers in the bush area north of Temiscaming.
